Home TeleCare and Data on Health Care

What is Home Telecare?

Home telecare is the delivery of health services from a distance. It is not meant to replace normal patient - health care worker visits or interactions but to provide better standards of care and support, and more timely interventions - particularly for those suffering chronic and complex disease conditions.

Who are TeleMedCare Pty. Ltd. and TeleMedCare Ltd.?

TeleMedCare Pty. Ltd. are an Australian-based company that has been developing and marketing home telecare systems for over half a decade. Telemedcare Ltd is a new company based in Lincoln, UK which is currently marketing the TeleMedCare System developed in Australia.

What is the TeleMedCare Health Monitor?

The TeleMedCare System provides routine scheduled monitoring of the health of people with chronic diseases in order to promote wellness and to manage chronic disease. For example, the system can be readily configured by an authorised healthcare worker to remind the patient to perform regular measurements of a range of clinical measurements (ECG, spirometry, temperature, weight, heart rate, blood oximetry, blood pressure and customised questionnaires on health and well-being).

Where was the system developed?

The original TeleMedCare System was developed and piloted in Australia at the University of New South Wales by Professors Branko Celler and Nigel Lovell.

What makes this system better than others on the market?

This system not only enables the constant monitoring of health with the ability for the results to be accessed by a medical professional but it also allows the patient to manage their medication effectively. A secure Web-based infrastructure allows clinicals and health care professionals to control the patients medications and mesurements and to view reports and longtidunal data on the patients' clinical data.

What uses does it have in treating patients with chronic diseases?

In the treatment of chronic diseases it is more beneficial for the health of the patient if their condition can be kept as stable as possible for the longest period of time. This gives the patient a better quality of life and our proposal is that this can be achieved by the constant monitoring of their health so that any changes can be rectified quickly by a change in medication or a visit to the doctor and without too much detriment to the patient or a long stay in hospital.

Will the need for home telecare increase over time?

Undoubtedly. At the current time in the UK 17.5 million adults may be living with a chronic disease, approx 80% of these cases being in the over 60s. It is estimated that 45% of those may suffer from more than one condition. The fgres are similar in all developed countries. For example, due to the aging population in Britain it is estimated that by 2030 the incidence of chronic disease in the over 65s will more than double.
